I have started filming my short film for the Kino Short Film Festival, and overall it has gone okay. We only have one day that shooting has gone awry, Friday. I had forgotten to send a follow-up email to one of the managers of a location we were going to shoot at, and we lost that location.
So, now we’re pinch-hitting and trying to make up a mock hospital room in the little TV studio we have on campus. It is probably going to be the least believable location in the film, but I’m hoping we can make it work in the end.
Editing-wise, the flick is going well! There are a few shots that I have noticed I should have picked up while filming, but I will just have to deal with how to cut around them and hope that the audience doesn’t go, “Hey, why didn’t we see that!?!” But at this point, it is what it is, and there is not really any going back right now.
At first the editing was frustrating me a little bit, because the movie just didn’t look enough like horror, suspense, or thriller; but then I found the magic ingredient while exploring different ways to color-grade the footage. Here it is: Green.
Here is a shot before the color-grading:
Here is the same shot after I crunched up the blacks, added green to the shadows, a small amount of red to the highlights, dropped the saturation, and just a little vignetting:
I think all around, the grading adds a nice bit of contrast, and a feeling of uneasiness from the green.
On top of doing the filming, editing, and color grading, I have made a rough draft of a movie poster for the film. Everyone in this class has to make a poster, but in the past, the posters have looked really…well…lame. I didn’t want my poster to have that lack of style, and didn’t want it to look like I just took a still from my movie and slapped a title on it (trust me, that’s how some of the posters have looked). Instead, I made this:
So there you have it, that’s all the updates since I last made a post. The project is moving along, and things are starting to take a well defined shape. I’ll post more as new developments happen!
